Newport Primary School in Brough has been awarded the primary science quality mark (PSQM) - celebrating a commitment to developing excellence in science leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.

The PSQM reviewers feedback stated: “Newport Primary continues to develop an inspiring curriculum. Teaching and Learning approaches are varied. There is trailblazing and creativity, constantly developing the range yet further. Science through music and links with PE are examples this year. For a little school it packs a great punch.'

Headteacher, Ms Debby O’Connell, said: ‘The primary science quality mark recognises a whole school commitment to raising the profile and quality of science education. We know how important it is for children to recognise the value and relevance of science in their lives – both now and in the future.

“This is the second time running we have achieved the highest PSQM, and we are one of few schools in Britain to have achieved this. It’s testament to how hard our small but unique team works.”

Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “It’s always a pleasure visiting Newport Primary. There’s such a lovely atmosphere in the school—full of curiosity, creativity, and care. The staff do a fantastic job making learning fun and inclusive, and the children are a real credit to them. This science award is a great achievement and a reflection of all the hard work going on behind the scenes. It’s lovely to see their efforts being recognised.”

PSQM is led by the University of Hertfordshire and is a comprehensive year-long professional development and school improvement programme. It gives primary science subject leaders the knowledge, capability and support needed to improve the quality and profile of science education across the entire school.  The accreditation is valid for three years, until 2028.
