Three primary schools have become the first in East Riding to be awarded the Historical Association Quality Mark.

Beswick and Watton CEVC, Bishop Wilton CEVC and Middleton on the Wolds CEVC Primary Schools have all been awarded the national award, recognising the schools’ high quality history provision.

Elizabeth Harros, Executive Head Teacher, said: “We work really hard to give the children a wealth of extra curricula and enrichment activities and I’m delighted that the Historical Association has recognised this across the Wolds Federation of Schools.

“We help the children really understand how things were in the past through a range of enrichment activities.”

Children at the schools have learnt about the Great Fire of London and to help them think about what people did, the children went outside onto the hills around the school and tried to transport water in buckets in a chain, to understand how hard work it had been. The children have acted out key events from famous people’s lives, such as Amy Johnson, and the schools print out old images as a backdrop for re-enactments. The children in key stage two have also had the experience of sleeping on HMS Belfast to understand how challenging life would have been for sailors and marines who lived aboard.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “Children learn and remember things the most when they are an active part of that learning experience. I’m sure the history lessons will be unforgettable memories for pupils at these primary schools. Well done to all involved!”
