Service users in the spotlight: Fairytale pantomime at Pastures Day Services

Wednesday, 30 April 2025

Service users from Pastures Day Services worked together to create a fairytale inspired pantomime for family and friends.

On Wednesday, 16 April, a group of service users came together to share their ‘Lost and Found’ pantomime which was written and performed by themselves.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Pastures Day Services, Goole, provides a variety of support to people with learning disabilities, people with autism and older people, including those with memory impairment conditions.

Creativity is always encouraged at Pastures and support workers not only help those who attend the day service to develop key skills, they help them to explore their imaginations and the arts.

Starting with a song, the pantomime featured sparkly, spectacular costumes including a princess and an evil witch, along with an intricate set centred around an enchanted forest with supporting props. With the support of staff, service users helped to create these elements, bringing their vision for the pantomime to life.

Throughout ‘Lost and Found’ the characters worked together to find everything from a stolen pumpkin, apple and wand, to a conductor’s whistle and much more, ‘’The story of lost and found, the day where everyone lost something special, but found something better, new friends.’’

Wendy, one of the service users who acted in the pantomime said: ‘I thought it was really good. I liked wearing the sparkly dress and I would do it again.’’ Wendy wrote the script with the rest of the cast and enjoyed working as a group.

The on-site kitchen sold a selection of cakes and scones, with all of the donations going towards the service’s welfare fund.

Many family members and friends of the service users came along to show their support and the show was live streamed to other day services across the East Riding.

Tom Denham, service manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: "We are incredibly proud of the creativity and dedication shown by our service users and staff at Pastures Day Services.

‘’Their fairytale-inspired pantomime, 'Lost and Found,' was a testament to their hard work and imagination. It was heartwarming to see them come together to create the performance, and to see the room full of family, friends, and the wider community. I can’t wait to see what the group create for their next performance!”

During the grand finale, each of the participants received a certificate for taking part as well a selection of chocolates. They enjoyed ending the event with a raffle in which they had the chance to win a variety of easter themed prizes including flowers, chocolates, teddies and a bunny rabbit balloon.
