Wednesday, 14 May 2025

Worklink, Cottingham hosted their VE Day celebration recently, inviting members of the community to come along and join in the fun.

The day was part of a wider programme of events taking place across the village on Thursday, 8 May, and involved service users with learning disabilities and autism taking part.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Worklink was adorned in union jack flags and posters celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Staff were dressed in 1940s style clothing, welcoming visitors cheerfully whilst war-time music played.

Café RouTEs, located inside Worklink, was serving traditional pie and pies with the menu featuring both cheese and onion pies and mince and vegetable pies. Visitors were also able to enjoy a selection of decorated cakes, prepared by the staff and service users.

The Worklink garden has also been decorated in union jack flags in the run up to the event, meaning it could be enjoyed by service users and community all week long. It was also a nice addition for anyone enjoying a beverage on the patio or under Worklink’s popular willow arch.

Service users at Worklink love to see people visiting the site, new and old faces are always welcome. Service users were involved in baking and serving the products for sale within the gardens and Café RoutES, this also enhances their customer service skills in preparation for employment.

The celebrations were underway at Worklink’s other site in Sewerby, with the staff also dressing up and inviting the community to take part in the merrymaking.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for adults, health and care, said: ‘’I am pleased to see that members of the Cottingham community enjoyed visiting Worklink during the VE Day celebrations.

‘’The staff and service users at Worklink always ensure that they put a lot of time and effort into preparing for events and it’s an excellent example of people working collaboratively to provide a wonderful experience to visitors. Worklink is a credit to the community.’’
