As the summer holidays approach, time spent online by our young people is inevitable.

Now is the ideal time for parents and carers to review their family settings for online devices around the home to ensure that they are fully up to date, with security and safety measures in place.

Family settings:

All well known gaming devices have family settings apps available which can be synced to your child’s console to allow adults to control the usage at any time, anywhere. Family settings allow you to set up passwords for in game purchases, control chat and interaction with others, and even set time limits for play. Children can then request a longer gaming session via the app, rather than sneak in extra time when they are meant to be sleeping.

YGAM

Ygam is the UK’s leading organisation for safeguarding children and young people online. They offer a vast range of guidance as well as training sessions.

YGAM deliver workshops for:

  • Teachers and Youth Workers
  • Healthcare Professionals
  • Social Care Professionals
  • Sports staff and volunteers
  • Community and Faith Leaders
  • Supporting Children in Care Professionals
  • Parents and Carers

All training is completely free to access. If you would like to attend one of YGAM’s upcoming workshops, then please select the training that is right for you and make a booking on their website.

Online exploitation

Child exploitation can take many forms, and online platforms are no exception, providing a vessel for criminal operatives to coerce children and young people into online groups which carry extreme safety risks. The BBC have a podcast available which looks in detail at an example of the exploitation of online spaces by a far right organisation. Listen now.
