Electrical goods amnesty to be held across East Riding to mark National Recycle Week

A series of amnesty events are to be held across the East Riding to help residents to recycle their unwanted small electrical goods.

Residents are being encouraged to bring along their old toasters, kettles, laptops and other small electrical items to the amnesty events, which are being held this month in Goole, Beverley, Driffield, Cottingham, Hornsea and Market Weighton.

All of the items collected will be taken to the East Riding’s household waste recycling sites, where they will be sent for recycling.

The amnesty events have been organised by the council’s waste and recycling officers to mark National Recycle Week 2018, which runs from September 24 to 30.

The amnesties are being held to encourage residents to take their old electrical items to their local household waste recycling site – instead of putting them in their bins at home.

Each year thousands of electrical items are found in the waste collected from residents’ blue and green wheelie bins in the East Riding – but none of those items can be recycled that way.

Councillor Symon Fraser, the council’s portfolio holder for strategic asset management, housing and environment, said: “Residents have made the East Riding the number one recycler in the country and do an amazing job of recycling at home.

“But some waste, like electrical items, can’t be put in your wheelie bins at home.

“By running these amnesties we are giving residents a chance to bring along their unwanted small electrical items for recycling and reminding them to use their local household waste recycling site in future.”

The electrical amnesty events will be held at the following locations. Just look out for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council recycling van and trailer:
