A new town bus service is to be piloted on market days, Wednesdays, in Hedon.

The bus service is to be funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, following talks with Hedon Town Council.

The pilot will run for six months to gauge the level of demand. If successful, the town council will consider funding the bus service in the future.

Service 84 Hedon Town will travel around the town on Wednesdays and will stop at the main bus stops, but it can also be hailed along the route. It can take passengers where they want to go on the route. There is no need to book, passengers can just turn up.

Service 84 Hedon Town will be run by the community transport group Holderness Area Rural Transport (HART).

HART already runs the CB3 Roos-Burton Pidsea-Hedon community bus service on Wednesdays and Fridays. The same bus can be used for the Service 84 route on Wednesdays to help keep costs down.

Cllr David Elvidge, portfolio holder for community involvement and voluntary sector at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "I'm really pleased we've been able to fund this pilot bus scheme for Hedon and I really hope local residents make the most of it, in the hope it can continue as we work together with the town council and HART.

"Community transport in our more rural areas is of paramount importance to us"

Cllr Steve Gallant, the chair of finance and general purposes at Hedon Town Council, said: "The town council is delighted to support the launch of the new town bus service with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and HART.

"It will provide a great 'hop on-hop off' service around every part of the town every Wednesday. I hope the service is well used, so that the town council can take on the maintenance of this lifeline service after the initial six-month trial."

Timetables for the new service are available locally and from Hedon Town Council. They can be obtained by emailing public.transport@eastriding.gov.uk
