Skirlaugh Playing Fields Association have officially opened the new completed works at the play area on Skirlaugh Playing Fields, Mill House Way, Skirlaugh, with the £71,690 awarded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments. Skirlaugh PFA were presented with a plaque from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to commemorate the funding.

The works included refurbishing and extended the existing play areas on the site and included the installation of new items on the play areas. The improvements and increased footprint will facilitate greater outdoor play potential with an inspiring range of equipment that will lead to more enthusiastic and creative play activities.

Consultation carried out by the PFA, with local residents, community groups and Skirlaugh Primary School students has determined that the previous old, tired and uninspiring playgrounds were not large or exciting enough to satisfy the needs of the children and youth population of the village.

Speaking at the opening, Paul Smith, Trustee at Skirlaugh Playing Fields Association, said: "We would like to thank East Riding of Yorkshire Council, not only for the plaque, but for providing the funds, without which we wouldn't be looking at the immaculate equipment. I am very proud to have been a part of this project and since completion we have seen so many happy children. It's not only the smiling faces of the children - this equipment will bring lots of other benefits, such as exercise and social contact, which are both important."

Councillor David Tucker, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing, added: "The award of these Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval is great news for this play area in Skirlaugh, and I am delighted that we have been able to facilitate them."
