East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced that construction works at Boothferry Bridge will start on Wednesday, 3 November, and will last for approximately six months.

Breheny Civil Engineering have been awarded the contract to deliver the scheme on behalf of the council.

The works will include the reconstruction of the two approach footpaths, replacement of the timber footpaths on the swing span of the structure including a new steel support beam, a new traffic barrier system to be installed, re-waterproofing of the carriageway and footpaths, bridge joint replacements, full road reconstruction, replacement of hydraulic pipes, parapet works, upgrades to the navigation lights and general maintenance improvements.

During the works, there will be a reduced speed limit of 30 mph, with a one way traffic light system and a vehicle width restriction of 3.5metres. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists at all times.

Some activities during the works will require road closures. The council and its contractors will work to keep the closures to a minimum and where possible they will take place at weekends and overnight to prevent disruption in the area. Signed diversion routes will be in place for closures and also for wide vehicles unable to access the bridge during the width restriction.

The first scheduled road closure will take place on Sunday, 7 November, from 18:00 until 06:00. Motorists and road users will be notified of future closures when the council receives confirmation of these dates from the main contractor.

Adam Holmes, head of infrastructure and facilities at the council, said: "These are critical and essential works to maintain the short and medium term use of the bridge. To carry the work out safely ,there will unfortunately be some road closures that will result in disruption and longer journeys for motorists. However, we will work with our contractor throughout the duration of the construction period to minimise the duration of the road closures and mitigate the effects as far as practicable.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all road users in advance for their patience and understanding during these works."
