New exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery celebrates recent acquisition of a Fred Elwell painting

Wed, 28 Nov 2018

A new free exhibition ‘The Elwells – a Partnership in Paint’ opens this Saturday (1 December) at Beverley Art Gallery, and features the recent acquisition of the painting 'In the Studio' by Fred Elwell, showing Mary Elwell as an artist, to commemorate 60 years since Fred’s death.

The new acquisition was purchased thanks to contributions from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Arts Council England, the Victoria and Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund, and the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery.

The new exhibition looks at Mary and Fred Elwell, to celebrate their mutual union in life and art.

Curator Helena Cox explained : “The new painting enabled us to substantially reinterpret our collection, and highlight our two main artists - Fred and Mary Elwell - as an example of a creative partnership, united equally by their love for each other and for the ideals of art.

“At a time when professional equality between genders was almost non-existent, the Elwells demonstrated not only that equality was possible, but also showed the amazing power of mutuality and professional respect. As a result, Beverley Art Gallery is proud to present their work alongside each other, celebrating the fruitfulness of their revolutionary artistic collaboration.

“The Elwells’ impact is far-reaching, and their work attracts the attention of art lovers and scholars alike from all over the world.

“I am delighted that the introduction panel in our exhibition was composed by Professor Tim Barringer of Yale University in the United States. Professor Barringer is the world’s leading academic expert on Edwardian painting, and it is a great privilege for Beverley Art Gallery to have his patronage over this new display of the Elwells.”

The exhibition will be on until late 2019, and there will be a series of talks and guided tours (most of them free of charge) throughout the year.

The launch on Saturday, 1 December from 1pm -3pm is free of charge and open to everybody.
