Musical Memories : The World of Herman Darewski' coming to the Treasure House in Beverley

Tue, 29 Jan 2019

A new exhibition celebrating the life and achievements of Herman Darewski will be at the Treasure House in Beverley from Saturday, 2 February to Saturday, 30 March.

Herman Darewski was the musical director at Bridlington Spa for nine summer seasons during the 1920s and 30s. He was a larger-than-life personality who in his day would have been well known to those with an interest in entertainment and light music. But as well as being a gregarious and creative frontman for the Spa, Darewski wrote songs for West End theatre and ran a music publishing business on London’s Charing Cross Road.

Using the extensive collections of East Riding Museums Service and material from Darewski enthusiast Mike Wilson, along with film footage and sound, this exhibition shines a light on Herman’s fascinating and fun world.

Curator Sally Hayes said: “This fascinating exhibition runs for eight weeks, so there is plenty of time to “discover Darewski”.

“If you would like to take a closer look at some of our Darewski material, chat to Mike Wilson and the Treasure House curator or even share some of your own material, pop in to our “Exhibitions Up Close” event. The event runs from 12noon until 3pm on Saturday, 2 March and takes place in the exhibition space. No need to book – just turn up!”

Opening times for the Treasure House are :

Monday, Wednesday and Friday : 9.30am to 5pm
Tuesday and Thursday : 9.30am to 8pm
Saturday: 9am to 4pm
