Learn basic map reading with Cover the Coast

Mon, 28 Jan 2019

As part of Active Coast 2019, a new-look Cover the Coast programme will offer exciting monthly outdoor coastal activities for adults, including a range of walks.

The Cover the Coast sessions will take place in some of the spectacular locations on our coastline.

The first session will be on Friday, 1 February, and will cover Basic Map Reading. Taking place at Flamborough South Landing from 10am – 3pm, it will be an opportunity to learn basic map reading skills using a map and compass. Participants will plan a route using hand rails, contour lines and grid referencing, and will then head out for a short walk.

The event is free; participants should meet at the Living Seas Centre, where there is a charge for the adjacent car park.

Booking is essential for the map reading event via https://www.bridspa.com/events/?purchase=261202

Other Cover the Coast events will include rockpooling; a history walk in Withernsea; cliffs and caves; and friction fire lighting.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “Cover the Coast proved very popular in 2018, but we have decided to tweak the programme this year to offer activities as well as just walks. I hope that the range of activities on offer will prove just as popular in 2019.”

There will also be two led Headlands Way walks, covering the route from Bridlington to Bempton, on Friday, 5 July, and Bempton to Filey on Friday, 2 August. Details of how to book, prices, and transport can be found at www.activecoast.org together with details of all the Cover the Coast sessions.
