As part of the current exhibition at the Treasure House in Beverley, visitors will be able to drop in on Saturday, 2 March from 12noon to 3pm to find out more about the life and work of composer, conductor and director of music at Bridlington Spa, Herman Darewski.
There will be Darewski-related handling material to take a closer look at; original vinyl playing on the 1930s gramophone; and screenings of Darewski’s films from the British Pathe archive.
Mike Wilson, Bridlington historian, will be on hand to answer any questions.
There is no need to book – just turn up.This event complements the exhibition, Musical Memories: The World of Herman Darewski, which runs until Saturday,30 March at the Treasure House.
Herman Darewski was the musical director at Bridlington Spa for nine summer seasons during the 1920s and 30s.He was a larger-than-life personality who in his day would have been well known to those with an interest in entertainment and light music. But as well as being a gregarious and creative frontman for the Spa, Darewski wrote songs for West End theatre and ran a music publishing business on London’s Charing Cross Road.
Using the extensive collections of East Riding Museums Service and material from Darewski enthusiast Mike Wilson, along with film footage and sound, this exhibition shines a light on Herman’s fascinating and fun world.
