A major road improvement scheme costing £1.1million is due to begin in Howden town centre later this month.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council project will see the full length of road along the main street through the town being resurfaced, including Pinfold Street, Bridgegate, Flatgate and Hull Road.

Work is due to start on Monday 25 March and is expected to take five months to complete.

Footpaths along the same stretch of road will also be resurfaced.

The scheme will involve both daytime and evening work, but will avoid morning and afternoon rush hours where possible.

The work is to be carried out by council contractor PBS (NE) Construction Ltd and will be split into four phases.

Phase one

From 25 March to 10 May - Road and footpath resurfacing will be carried out along Pinfold Street and Bridgegate between the junction with Knedlington Road and the Co-op store car park.

A temporary road closure will be in place during the working hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm on weekdays, with a signed diversion directing traffic via Treeton Road and Hailgate.

Phase two

From 13 May to 7 June - Road and footpath resurfacing will take place on Bridgegate between the Co-op store car park and the Zolsha restaurant car park.

Work along this section will be carried out between 6pm and 11pm on week days.

There will be a temporary road closure in place during those hours, with traffic being diverted via Boothferry Road and Hailgate.

Phase three

From 10 June to 23 July – Work will be carried out between 9.30am and 5pm on week days to resurface the road and footpath along Flatgate, between the Zolsha restaurant car park and the junction with Hull Road.

There will be a temporary road closure in place during those hours, with traffic being diverted via Boothferry Road and Hailgate.

HGVs will be diverted via Holme On Spalding Moor and Highfield.

Phase four

From 24 July to 23 August – road and footpath resurfacing will be carried out on Hull Road between the junctions with Flatgate and Hull Road Avenue, between 9.30am and 3.30pm on week days.

There will be a temporary road closure in place during those hours, with traffic being diverted via Boothferry Road and Hailgate.

HGVs will be diverted via Holme On Spalding Moor and Highfield.

Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We would like to thank Howden residents, businesses people and motorists in advance for their patience during this resurfacing scheme.

“It is a lengthy project, but we have tried to minimise disruption as much as we can.

“People will notice a big improvement to the road surface when the work is completed.”

Throughout the scheme access will still be permitted within the works areas to residents, business owners and emergency services.

Residents and motorists are asked not to leave vehicles parked at the side of the road during each section of the work.

The main street through Howden will be open as normal outside the specified working hours, except during the phase three works.
