East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s countryside access team has arranged a programme of events in June when participants can learn new skills, and discover the beautiful East Riding.
There will be Workshops as an Introduction to Wood Carving on Saturday, 8 June, and Sunday, 9 June at Humber Bridge Country Park, from 10am -4pm. These outdoor workshops will introduce participants to wood carving – learn techniques for carving green ash timber using wood carving chisels with a mallet. All timber and tools will be provided. The tutor will be professional sculptor Saffron Waghorn.
Participants should bring a packed lunch, and meet at the Hessle Foreshore entrance next to the black mill car park. Booking is essential; the workshop is only available to those who have not previously attended. The workshop costs £25 each (minimum age 16).
A Woodland Charcoal Workshop on Saturday, 15 June, at Millington Wood Local Nature Reserve near Pocklington from 10am -5.30pm will be an introduction to the concepts and practices involved in producing charcoal. This will include timber extraction and splitting; filling and lighting the kiln; emptying after the burn; and grading and bagging the charcoal. Hot drinks will be provided and a barbecue will be lit for lunch (bring own food).
Booking is essential, and tickets cost £20 each for adults (16-18 year olds can attend if accompanied by an adult).
Sunday, 16 June will see an Oakhill Pond Safari at Oakhill Nature Reserve , off Tom Pudding Way, Goole, from 10am – 1pm. This will be a chance to explore Oakhill pond and discover the variety of creatures in it, including water scorpions, water stick insects, and dragonfly nymphs. Pond dipping nets and trays will be provided. Booking is essential for this free event.
Also on Sunday, 16 June, there will be an event to Discover Pocklington Canal from 10am -4pm – a circular walk through Allerthorpe Woods and along the Pocklington Canal, to learn more about this waterway built nearly 200 years ago, which is now a haven for wildlife. The event is in partnership with the Canal and River Trust. Meet at Burnby Hall, Pocklington for this 12 mile walk. Booking is essential – adult tickets cost £3.50, and £2.50 for adults over 60 and young people under 16. Family tickets (two adults and three children) cost £9.
