The winners of a competition to design a mural for the hoarding around the multi-service centre at East Riding Leisure Hornsea, which is currently undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment, have been announced.

Year 12 art and design student Kirstie has been named the overall winner, and wins a tablet and a three-month premier membership to any East Riding of Yorkshire Council leisure centre.

The judging took place at Hornsea School and Language College on Thursday, 9 May. The judging panel consisted of: Beverley Art Gallery curator Helena Cox; East Riding Leisure Hornsea senior facility manager Dave Chalmers; Libraries, Museums and Archive marketing officer Katy Connolly; East Riding Leisure marketing officer Tracey Peacock; and design technology teacher at Hornsea School and Language College, Laura Field.

Kirstie’s artwork incorporates exciting elements of the new centre, which opens in Spring 2020, including East Riding Leisure Hornsea, a children’s centre, a new extended café area and the town’s library and customer services.

Five runners-up were also announced. There were: Year 10 design technology graphics student Issy, Year 10 graphics student Rebecca W, Year 10 graphics student Mia, Year 8 textiles student Imogen and Year 10 graphics student Rebecca A.
All six winning designs were installed onto the hoarding on-site last month. Details of the redevelopment of the centre can be found at www.eastridingleisure.co.uk/hornsea or follow on Facebook at East Riding Leisure Hornsea @ERLeisureHornsea.

  • Work on the refurbishment is progressing well; the foundations and the steel structure from the new café ground floor and gym first floor is now complete. The internal demolition is now complete with the new walls started for the re-modelling inside.
