£600,000 improvement scheme for Pocklington road to begin

An essential improvement scheme for a road in Pocklington is due to begin.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest £600,000 to upgrade The Mile in Pocklington, between Chapmangate to Swineridge Lane, with the start scheduled for Monday 23 March.

The project aims to slightly widen the existing carriageway and strengthen its edges, resurfacthe road and footpathsas well as enhance the drainage.

The works are planned to take place in three phases under 24-hour road closures.

Phase 1 

The first phase, due to start on 23 March, will see a section of The Mile being closed between Garth End/The Mile Roundabout to the junction at Meltonby Road, and is scheduled to take seven weeks to complete, weather permitting.

A signed diversion route will be in place between Garths EndYapham RoadFangfoss RoadYapham RoadMain StreetMeltonby LaneMeltonby Road and The Mile.

Phase 2 

The second phase will follow on, with The Mile being shut between Meltonby Road and Swineridge Laneand will include a small section of Millers Lane.

A diversion route will be in place between Swineridge LaneGivendale HillMain RoadFridaythorpe RoadA166 York RoadA166 Garrowby HillA166 Garrowby StreetGarrowby RoadPocklington LaneMeltonby Road and The Mile.

Phase 3

The third and final stage is due to start on Tuesday 21 July to coincide with the school summer holidays.

The work is scheduled to take three weeks and will be carried out from The Mile roundabout to the junction of Chapmangate and Bridge Street.

A small section of Kirkland Street will be closed to allow for junction resurfacing.

The diversion route will be between Bridge StreetChapmangateGeorge StreetYapham RoadGarths End and The Mile.

Residents and businesses wilbe able to access properties within the working areas, although there may temporary restrictionswhich people will be notified aboutPost, deliveries, bin collections and the emergency services won’t be affected.

The works will be carried out by contractor Britcon (UK) Ltd on behalf of the council.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Thank you to residentsbusinesses and drivers in advance for bearing with us while we carry out this work as efficiently as we can.

Unfortunately there will be closures, but this work is essential to improve The Mile for years to come.

"We would urge motorists and pedestrians to please follow our team’s instructions and diversion routes until we can complete the scheme.
