East Riding students celebrate GCSE results

Students across the East Riding are today, Thursday 21 August, receiving their GCSE results.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families, and education, said: "Well done to all our pupils in the East Riding who received their GCSE results today!

"I hope all students achieve their desired results, and success in their future endeavours, whether that be in further education, training, or their chosen career.

"Many thanks to the diligent and passionate teachers for the support they give in helping students reach their full potential.”

GCSE Students at Headlands School Bridlington achieved triple the amount of grade 9’s compared to 2024 and doubled the amount of grade 8s, including top students Nethmy Dissanayake, Tilly Driver and Roman Simpkin

Students at The Market Weighton School are celebrating some excellent grades despite the challenges of the past three years leading up to this summer’s exams.  Despite the toughening up on the grade boundaries this year several students were celebrating with the top grades.   

Mr Harrison, Headteacher said ‘Overall our grades mirrored the national picture with a return to 2019 grading meaning fewer top grades but within that we have had many individual success stories such as Leo who with the dedicated support of our staff has managed to achieve grade 7 in maths and computing and a grade 5 in further maths.  Leo was part or our enhanced provision cohort and has struggled with learning in large groups but will be going on to study A levels in maths, further maths and computing at York College. 

“All our students have individual successes and will progress to a wide range of sixth form Colleges, FE Colleges and apprentice providers.  I would like to thank all our staff for their herd work in supporting these students through a challenging time in school and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Beverley High School are also very proud of their pupils who have performed exceptionally well in their GCSEs this year which reflect the hard work, motivation and commitment of the students and teachers with the support of parents.

Bridlington School is celebrating the achievements of its Year 11 students, who have demonstrated resilience, determination, and excellence in their GCSE results this summer.

Kate Parker-Randall said "We are very proud of our students' achievements this year. Despite facing numerous challenges, many of our students achieved remarkable individual successes. Among them a student who earned two Grade 9s and seven Grade 8s, having already completed their GCSE Latin independently in Year 10 with a Grade 9, an inspiring example of their tenacity and academic excellence.

With guidance from Mrs Driver, our careers advisor, and the wider pastoral and careers teams, every student has secured a place for their next step—whether continuing in our thriving Sixth Form, moving on to college, apprenticeships, or joining the armed forces.”

Hornsea School and Language College Headteacher Steven Ostler said: “Another great day of celebration here at Hornsea, a really excellent set of results from a talented year group. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and students for their hard work. This has allowed us to achieve a great set of outcomes for our students."

Pupils and staff at Longcroft School and Sixth Form College in Beverley are celebrating strong GCSE examination results, significantly above national comparisons across the board. This includes two pupils set to be presented with special letters of commendation after not only achieving the coveted grade 9 in 10 different subjects, but doing so with scores that placed them amongst the very highest performers in the country.

Following his extraordinary achievement, Sam said, “I can’t believe my results. The progress I have made since the start of year 10 is amazing. I am so grateful to my teachers for inspiring me and helping me to achieve the grades I have.”

David Perry, Headteacher of Longcroft School and Sixth Form, says, “We are so proud of all our pupils who today have seen their hard work and determination pay off. We know many will progress into our sixth form college, which celebrated great outcomes last week, while others will be exploring a range of wider options across the region. We wish them all every success. We must not underestimate how challenging the secondary educational experience has been for these young people, nor the significant shadow cast by the Covid pandemic. They have shown tremendous courage, character and fortitude.“

Withernsea High School stated that they are immensely proud of their Year 11 students, who have worked with determination and focus to achieve results to be proud of. These achievements open the door to exciting new opportunities, whether continuing their studies at college, pursuing apprenticeships, or beginning training and employment.

They also thanked the dedicated staff, parents, carers, and families for the invaluable encouragement and support they have given the students throughout their time at the school. Withernsea Year 11s have shown resilience and commitment, and they leave not only with strong qualifications, but also with the skills, experiences, and confidence to thrive in the next chapter of their lives.

Beverley Grammar School Headteacher Gavin Lord-Chappel said “It was fantastic to see our BGS students pick up their exam results this morning. They have worked really hard, along with all of our staff, to secure excellent outcomes and we are very proud of them and their achievements. It is also great that we will see many of them back with us in September as they have already signed up to Beverley J6 to study A levels”
