East Riding residents are urged to behave respectfully when visiting cemeteries, amid a higher volume of visitors than usual.

At this time of the year, many residents come to visit their loved one's graves, and it is vital to ensure that visitors are considerate to the site and to other mourners.

Cemetery and grounds staff work tirelessly year-round to ensure that the cemeteries are looking tidy and aesthetically pleasing for those who wish to visit loved ones’ resting places.

It is therefore important to only park in a designated parking area or on the hard standing road close a loved ones memorial and obey the speed limits.

Additionally, visitors must not drive over or park on any grass, as that may form part of a grave, nor move cones to drive on pathways or move any boulders or stones which have been placed to protect new grass growth

Visitors are also urged to not leave rubbish around any grave visited, particularly cigarette butts.

Councillor Paul West, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for environment and transport said “We know this may be a difficult time of year for some families, and many wish to visit their loved ones resting places. However, it is vital that we all act in a considerate way when visiting East Riding cemeteries.”
