World Breastfeeding Week runs from this Saturday, 1 August until Friday, 7 August 2026.

World Breastfeeding Week events in the East Riding include:

  • Monday, 3 August at West Park, Goole from 1.15pm to 2.45pm

The global campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and bring together advocates to protect, promote and support parents and organisations, reduce inequalities and increase breastfeeding rates worldwide.

This year’s theme led by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) network is ‘Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works’.

Support provided to families through our Infant Feeding Service has resulted in improved breastfeeding rates across the East Riding over the past seven years; with rates at ten days increased from 56% to 64%, rates at 6–8-weeks increased from 44% to 53%, and exclusive breastfeeding at 6-8 weeks increasing from 35% to 41%.

What is the role of the East Yorkshire Infant Feeding Service?

The service provides parents with information and support on feeding and caring for their baby throughout pregnancy, birth and throughout a child’s first formative years.

The Infant Feeding Service is a unique partnership between EastRiding of Yorkshire Council and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. The service recently achieved the UNICEF UK Gold Baby Friendly award for the seventh consecutive year.

Residents can find out more about Infant Feeding support in the East Riding on the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust Connect website and the East Riding Family Hubs website.

Where can parents go for peer support with breastfeeding in the East Riding?

The council run free breastfeeding support groups at several Family Hubs (children’s centres). The groups are well attended and a great place to ask questions, meet other parents and connect, especially during the early baby days.

Parents can find their nearest group on the East Riding Family Hub website directory
